Ibulanku Malaria Prevention and Control for Community Development Project

Partner: People and Development Initiatives (2005-11)

The aims of the project are a sustainable reduction in malarial morbidity and mortality and the increased opportunities for education and economic and social development (currently impeded by high levels of malarial morbidity and mortality).

The project staff have been working with four villages surrounding the Ibulanku Health Centre to increase community awareness about malaria and its management and prevention; and to take steps to prevent and control malaria through the supply of mosquito nets and training. Due to constant demand from the wider district community and local medical authorities, the project is being extended to include the wider community.

The projects activities include distributing mosquito nets and a creative education program. The education program uses street drama, house visits and public meetings to effectively communicate the required steps to decrease the risk of malaria infection.

Regina’s story is just one example of how people are being helped by this project:

“I Regina Kalebi am happy. I sleep under the net and I have no problem with it. It is good because mosquitoes stopped biting me and my husband. No malaria at all! We can now work in the gardens, pick our coffee and get money. Our children can attend school daily. We now know how to prevent and treat malaria.”
